WE WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR THIS Over 100 guests attended our film night which was kindly sponsored by the Mayor of Mosman, Denise Wilton. Peter FitzSimons was our genial host and we were thrilled that Jessie Taylor- the film's writer and producer flew up from Melbourne especially to be with us for the first Sydney screening of her documentary, "We Will Be Remembered For This”. Wonderfully filmed, edited and sound tracked, it tells a very moving story of the effects on a small group of young people who experienced a little of what life is like for asylum seekers locked up in Baxter Immigration Detention Centre. The film was so popular that all copies of the DVD sold out. We have taken several orders for more which will be posted out next week. Many copies of the book 'Acting From the Heart ' were also sold. As staunch supporter David Flakelar remarked, wherever BASF is, there is always a raffle! Thanks to Carol Dettmann at Chapter & Verse (Wellington Lane Press) for donating the superb books on Max Dupain, stunning Sydney black and white photographer Roger Scott & the construction of the Glebe Island (Anzac) Bridge. Fittingly, these were won by Noel Wilton - himself a very gifted photographer. Mary O'Toole won the Jeroboam of Shiraz kindly donated by McPherson Wines and Margaret Rush the magazine subscription kindly donated by Better Homes and Gardens. Our special thanks to Mayor Denise Wilton for her initiatives to support our work. She truly embodies the spirit which, about 3 years ago, saw Mosman vote to become an official Refugee Welcome Zone - registered with the Refugee Council of Australia. Sincere thanks also to the Mayor's personal assistant, Sarah Jackson, who fielded hundreds of phone calls and emails and to Neal Garrett, Council's caretaker who set up the chambers and acted as our Maitre De in such a professional and helpful manner. Thankyou to Peter FitzSimons whom we were delighted to have on board promoting the cause. And particular thanks to Jessie Taylor - an extraordinarily high achieving young woman who was responsible not only the film but the venture itself. Check it out on: www.wewillberemembered.wordpress.com We had to turn lots of people away as this event booked out very quickly. WE WILL HOLD ANOTHER SCREENING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. PLEASE STAY TUNED & send us an email if you would like to be notified. |
